Happy Birthday Emmett Till! Biden honors the Till family with a national monument in Bronzeville
Can this preserve our nation's history?
Happy Saturday!
This week was the anniversary of Emmett Till’s 82nd birthday. He was born on July 25, 1941 on Chicago’s South Side.
At the age of 14, Emmett Till was tortured, kidnapped, and lynched in Mississippi, after being accused of offending a white woman. The two white men responsible for Emmett Till’s death were acquitted by an all-white jury.
Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett Till's mother, held an open-casket funeral on the South Side of Chicago to demonstrate the impact of racial injustice, igniting a national conversation that propelled the Civil Rights Movement.
This week, Biden honored Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley with a national monument, spanning across three federally protected sites in Illinois and Mississippi. Will this preserve our nation’s history? Read our latest solutions journalism article now.
